Chabtan are a band from France that plays a mixture of melodic death metal and deathcore with a touch of Mayan folk music and this is a review of their 2018 album "Nine Levels" which was released by Dark Tunes Music Group.
Mayan folk instruments and ritualistic chanting start off the album along with some tribal sounding percussion before going into a heavier direction while all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them along with the solos and leads being done in a very melodic style.
Vocals are mostly death metal growls along with some screams, extreme metal/hardcore style shouts and spoken word parts being utilized at times while the riffs also bring in a great amount of melody along with the folk elements also being mixed into the heavier sections of the songs at times and when the music speeds up a small amount of blast beats can also be heard.
When synths are utilized they give the songs more of an atmospheric and symphonic feeling feeling while the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and as the album progresses clean playing can also be heard briefly along with the closing track being an instrumental.
Chabtan plays a musical style that takes melodic death metal, deathcore and Mayan folk music and mixes them together to create a sound of t heir own, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover Mayan Mythology themes.
In my opinion Chabtan are a very great sounding mixture of melodic death metal, deathcore and Mayan folk music and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The last Mayan King" "Mayan Messiahs" "Nourished by Four Gods" and "The Last Mayan God". 8 out of 10.
