Lay Down Rotten are a band from Germany that plays a very melodic form of death metal and this is a review of their 2013 album "Deathspell Catharsis" which was released by Apostasy Records.
"Cassandras Haunting" which is also the first song on the album opens up with dark sound effects along with some soft acoustic guitar playing before adding in heavy and melodic sounding guitar riffs as well as some drums and then speeding up along with some blast beats which also leads up to some deep death metal growls and then the music starts to alternate between mid paced and fast parts along with some melodic guitar riffing and high pitched screams and when t he song gets closer to the end a small amount of guitar leads are added in.
"Deathspell Catharsis" which is also the title track of the album begins with heavy and melodic sounding guitar riffs along with some drums and then the growls make their way into the music before going into a slower direction for a few seconds before speeding up again and adding in guitar solos which also leads to the music alternating between slow and fast parts and towards the end there is a brief use of high pitched screams being utilized along with some synths in the last few seconds.
"Schaedelberg" opens up with nature sounds and people being tortured before adding in some dark, heavy and melodic guitar riffs along with some drums and guitar leads and then the music speeds up a bit and adds in growls which also leads to the music alternating between mid paced and fast parts as well as some high pitched screams and halfway through the song there is a brief use of guitar solos and leads being utilized before adding in a small amount of blast beats.
"The Fever" begins with shouts and chants before adding in heavy and melodic sounding guitar riffing along with some drums and death metal growls and a few seconds later the music slows down along with a small amount of clean parts and high pitched screams and after a couple of minutes there is a brief use of blast beats before adding in guitar solos.
"Release Into Nothingness " which is an instrumental begins with soft classical guitar playing and the short is very short and only a minute long.
"Zombiefied Elecrtified" starts up with heavy and melodic sounding guitar riffs and drums and a few seconds alter death metal growls and high pitched screams start to kick in and the song sticks mostly to a mid paced direction with only a small amount of fast parts being utilized.
"Among The Ruins Of A Once Glorified Temple" kicks in with heavy and melodic sounding guitar riffs along with some drums and a few seconds later the music speeds up and growls start to kick in as well as the song alternating between mid paced and fast parts and after awhile high pitched screams are added in along with some guitar solos and leads.
"Infernal Agony" comes in with heavy and melodic guitar riffs along with some drums along with some guitar solos and leads as well as speeding up and adding in deep death metal growls and after awhile the music starts to alternate between slow and fast parts and you can also hear bass guitars in certain sections of the song as well as the guitar riffing utilizing melody as well as a small amount of guitar solos and leads.
"Blood On Wooden Crosses" hits it off with heavy and melodic sounding guitar riffs along with some drums and a few seconds alter deep death metal growls start to kick in and the song goes into a faster direction and then alternates between mid paced and fast parts.
"Blasphemous Rituals For the Perverted" which is also the last song on the album starts up with sound effects before adding in heavy and melodic guitar riffs along with some drums and a few seconds alter deep death metal growls kick in and after awhile t he music starts to speed up a bit along with some blast beats as well as bringing in a brief use of guitar solos and leads.
Song lyrics cover dark, blasphemous and gore themes, while the production has a very strong, powerful, heavy and professional sound to it.
In my opinion Lay Down Rotten are a very great sounding melodic death metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album.
