Mastic Scum are a band from Austria that h as been featured before in this zine with a musical style I would describe as being old school grindcore with elements of brutal death metal and this is a review of their 2013 album "CTRL" which was released by Massacre Records.
"Controlled Collapse" which is also the first song on the album opens up with harsh noise elements before adding in a spoken word sample which leads up to some heavy, technical and brutal guitar riffs along with drums as well as some deep death metal growls and then the music speeds up a bit and you can hear bass guitars in certain sections of the song and after awhile a brief use of guitar solos and leads are added into the song as well as some high pitched screams.
"Dehumanized" opens up with sound effects and spoken word samples before adding in heavy guitar and bass riffs along with some drums which also leads up to some growls and screams along with some technical elements and a few seconds later a small amount of guitar solos and leads are added into the later and halfway through the song melodies are added into the guitar playing
"Cause & Effect" begins up with sound effects before adding in heavy guitar riffs and drums which also utilize some blast beats when the music speeds up in certain sections of the song as well as mixing in a brief use of spoken word parts which also lead up to some growls and during the last minute guitar solos and leads are added in for a few seconds and the song closes with some noise elements.
"Brute-Force-Methode" starts up with heavy guitar riffs and drums along with some growls before going into an old school grindcore direction and you can also hear bass guitars in certain sections of the song as well as a brief use of blast beats and a minute later guitar solos and leads make their way into the song along with some technical elements.
"D1S3MBOD1M3NT" kicks in with some sound effects before adding in heavy guitar and bass riffs along with some drums and a few seconds later growls kick in and the song sticks to a more mid paced direction.
"Rebornation" comes in with heavy and technical sounding guitar riffs along with some drums that utilize a small amount of blast beats before adding in deep death metal growls and you can also hear a small amount of melody being utilized in the guitar riffing which also leads up to a brief use of guitar leads, powerful bass guitars and a brief us e of spoken word parts.
"Perceptive Illusion" hits it off with sound effects before adding in heavy and technical sounding guitar riffs along with some drums before speeding up a bit and adding in death/grind growls along with some high pitched screams and towards the end there is a brief use of blast beats.
'Hyper-Detection 2.0" makes its way in with heavy guitar and bass riffs along with some drums and then the music speeds up a bit and adds in growls along with some blast beats and towards the end melodic guitar riffing and spoken word parts are added into the song.
"Create/Negate" finds its way in with heavy guitar riffs and drums before speeding up a bit and adding in blast beats which also leads up to some growls and after a minute guitar solos and leads are added into the song along with some high pitched screams and powerful bass guitar shortly after that and towards the end spoken word samples are added into the song.
"The Vortex Within" brings its way in with sound effects before adding in heavy and brutal guitar riffs along with some drums which also leads up to growls and a small amount of blast beats but mostly sticking to mid paced sections.
"Resurrection" which is also the last song on the album begins with sound effects before adding in heavy guitar riffs and drums which also leads up to some deep growls and you can also hear the bass guitars in certain sections of the song as well as a brief use of spoken word samples as well as the guitar riffing getting more melodic.
Song lyrics cover society and death, while the production has a very strong, powerful, heavy, and professional sound where you can hear all of the musical elements that are present on this recording.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Mastic Scum and if you are a fan of grindcore mixed with death metal, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Controlled Collapse" "Perceptive Illusion" "Create/Negate" and "Resurrection". RECOMMENDED BUY.
