Ataxia Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
-Were a unique 4 piece Death Metal band From London Ontario.

2.In November you had released an album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?
-A very diverse mix of many different metal genres.

3.The band has been around since 2008 but so far has only released a single and a full length, can you tell us a little bit more about the gap between recordings?
-In 2009 we actually released a six song demo with a drum machine called “A.I.cide” The band was always on the look out for an actual drummer but the search took a while.  So the drummer search, writing and recording the album in our studio are the reasons for the gap.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
-Pretty much the observations of the world around us. Aliens, War, Sci-Fi, Metaphors, Government Conspiracies etc.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Ataxia'?
-Ataxia means “Loss of all muscle coordination” It’s a  rare disease… And that’s what were are, a rare original sound.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?
-We have played a bunch of shows with some great local bands in which we always hold close, cause without the people close to you we are nothing. Cryptopsy was probably one of our most favorite shows that we have played, we just love those guys and a dude broke his ankle and the crowd was wild. Good times and as far as our stage performance goes it’s pretty chaotic, energetic and musically precise. We always get the crowd going.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?
-If the opportunity arises we would definitely consider touring, but our main focus right now is to play shows and write new material.

8.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?
-Yes we are defiantly looking, we have also had a lot of help from our good friends at Black Element Productions, we also currently have some distro through Galy Records. But again until anything arises our main focus is playing shows and writing new material.

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of brutal death metal?
-We have had a great response as an independent band, We have sent out merch all over the world and have received great response in every way from the internet to the crowds at our shows.

10.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part off?
-We all have little musical endeavors on the side, but none to bring to mention at the moment. Our main focus is Ataxia.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
-We have a lot planned for the future, there is already plans in the works to release a new E.P.
Just always gonna try to progress and create fresh new tunes for us and hope people listen.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
-Some influences I guess would be Suffocation, Hate Eternal, Deeds Of Flesh, Devourment, Cephalic Carnage, Lost Soul, Cannibal Corpse, Beneath The Massacre, Gorod and many others we can’t think of at the moment.
Lately we have been listening to bands like Archspire, Beyond Creation, Spawn Of Possession, Soreption, Nile and Cryptopsy.

13.What are some of your non musical interests?
-Beer, Smoking, Fine artisan chocolates, Hungarian Paprika, Boomerangs and a good porno.

14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
-Spread the word of Ataxia and stand by for mind control!

Incinerate Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording of the new album? Man,  No rest for the wicked!  We have an upcoming European tour -  Eradicating Europe- with Internal Suffering and Neuroma.  We are playing Neurotic Death Fest, Insane Insanity Fest, Madrid Death Fest, SWR Fest... and many more.  We have a couple new shirt designs and we have been discussing what direction for the next album as well.

2.You have a new album coming out this year, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?  The first album was really a crash course.  We bought the recording gear and figured out how to use it as we recorded so it was definitely an amateur DYI sound.  For Anatomize we had better musicians and way more of a professional sound.  For the new album we wanted kind of a mix of the two.  A professionally produced NASTY, brutal sounding album and I think that's exactly what we accomplished.

3.This is the first album to be released in 7 years, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time frame? Total melt down HAHA.  When Scott quit the band we were at a loss.  He was the primary writer and handled almost all of the bands affairs.  I actually wanted to end it and try a new band.  Sash, convinced me that he had learned enough of Scotts writing style and that his friend Ted could play Scotts stuff no problem.  Since we had a decent name in the underground I decided to keep it going.  I'm glad we did.  I think Sash made an amazing album, Darren as always CRUSHED on the drums and its my most diverse vocals to date.

4.The lyrics on the new album have a science fiction concept to them, can you tell us a little bit more about the lyrical content of the new recording?  Lyrics to me are important.  I think a lot of death metal bands are more focused on just making the gurgles.  I wanted to have memorable parts that people could "sing" along too yet still retain that brutality.  It tells a story loosely based on the H.G. Wells War of the Worlds, but ties into modern day.  It explores the possibility that aliens have been on the planet for centuries walking among us yet terraforming under the earths surface. Strip mining water below our surface and performing experiments in underground caverns. The sink holes happen because they become careless.  We spot them and within seconds these space ships travel light years to attack us and eradicate the human species.  There is a track on how this relates to the loss of faith and the realization that religion is a fraud.  We were not created by god but by an ancient alien race.  The humans fight back and create a machine called the Berserker that starts to win our planet back.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Incinerate'? Scott had come up with the name when we only had two songs written.  We weren't ultimately sure of the direction of our music or lyrical content so we wanted something that could apply to about anything in the death metal field but not have us pigeon hold into one area.

6.The band members are all located in different location from Canada, Minnesota and Maine, how does the band get together to compose the music?
It definitely poses challenges that most bands don't have to deal with.  Still, there are positives.  Everything is written to a set tempo so it forces everyone to play at one consistent speed.  The guys have to be on point and responsible for their own part.  We send a lot of emails back and forth to get everything nailed down.

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?  We played a show in Denver years ago where there were 3 different pits going at once and it was soo rad.  The last Building Temples From Death Fest was hella fun.  I made a comment of "how our stage is your stage" just wanting people to get up on the stage and have fun... next thing I know people were stage diving and going off.  We got Majewski on stage to do Anathema off of Anatomize.  It was a blast.  The M.O.D. fest was another amazing show.  Our performance wasn't the best but it was just an amazing experience and something i'll never forget.

8.Do you have any touring or show plans once the new album is released? First and foremost is the Eradicating Europe tour.  We are beyond excited as its our first European tour.  After that we want to hit up Indonesia and Canada.  Those are our next goals.

9.Over the years how has the feedback been to your music by fans of technical and brutal death metal? Its been really good.  I think the long time between albums and line up changes forcing us to cancel shows and turn down tours has definitely hurt us.  Right now we have an amazing line-up and I only see the band growing.

10.Are any of the band members also involved with any other musical projects or bands these days? Sash is possibly filling in for some friends of ours on a tour- I don't wanna say who yet as im not sure if its 100% but it should be a killer time for him.  Darren has just been a studio drummer but we have discussed with Duane Timlin about drumming for us full time.  Duane is a true veteran of the scene and an amazing drummer.  I know he is currently doing the Acme Grind Corporation which is ex Maggot Twat and he is also drumming for another MN Death Metal band named Nailed Shut.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future? Sash has a new song written that is Brodequin meets Severed Savior.  SO expect more blasting brootality.  Everyones all Slam and we're like lets go faster!

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays? I still listen to Necrotic Disgorgement a lot.  I just got the Euphoric Defilement cd, Disentomb Misery and Delusional Parasistosis.  That's about it for brutal death metal stuff.  I go in cycles, I mix that with Steel Panther, Dead Kennedys, Fear, Suicidal Tendencies, Anthrax.  Kinda a wide array of metal, punk, hardcore and thrash

13.What are some of your non musical interests? Ive owned a laundry list of cool muscle cars.  I used to love street racing and I'm a bit of a car freak.  Having kids as cut down on that a bit due to the cost.  I build guitars at Roeller's Custom Guitars and Cthulhu Guitar Cabinets as well.

14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts? I just wanna thank everyone who took the time to read my ramblings.  It is important to me to be humble and to convey how thankful for everything that has happened for this band. We greatly appreciate the support and everyone who has or continues to purchase our mech with their hard earned money.  You could have done about anything else with your money but you choose to buy something we created and that means a lot to us.  Thank you.

Incinerate/Eradicating Terrestrial Species/Comatose Music/2015 CD Review

Incinerate  are  a  band  from  Minnesota  that  plays  a  very  brutal  and  technical  form  of  gore/death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015  album  "Eradicating  Terrestrial  Species"  which  will  be  released  in  April  by  Comatose  Music.

Nature  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  the  sounds  of  ufo's  landing  and  invading  the  earth  and  after  the  intro  the  music  goes  into  more  of  a  very  fast,  brutal  and  technical  death  metal  sound  along  with  some  low  end  guttural  growls  and  you  can  also  hear  a  touch  of  slam  death  metal  in  the  bands  musical  style.

Throughout  the  recording  there  is  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  high  pitched  screams  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  the  alien  invasion  samples  of  the  intro  also  make  their  return  on  some  of  the  tracks  along  with  some  sci  fi  movie  samples  and  the  music  goes  for  more  of  the  modern  style  of  brutal  death  metal  and  avoids  any  use  of  guitar  solos  or  leads.

Incinerate  plays  a  style  of  death  metal  that  is  very  modern,  brutal,  guttural  and  technical  sounding  and  also  brings  in  elements  of  slam  death  metal,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  a  concept  album  based  on  Science  Fiction  and  the  absence  of  faith  in  religion.

In  my  opinion  Incinerate  are  a  very  decent  sounding  technical  and  brutal  death  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Inhuman  Innoculation"  "Unable  to  Ascend"  and  "Fucking  The  Rotting  Nun".  7/5  out  of  10.

Gorgatron/Inner Supremacy/ZeroBudget Records/2014 CD Review

Gorgatron  are  a  band  from  North  Dakota  that  plays  a  brutal  mixture  of  death  metal  and  grindcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "Inner  Supremacy"  which  was  released  by  ZeroBudget  Records.

A  very  heavy  and  brutal  death  metal  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  sounding  very  powerful  and  the  music  also  incorporates  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  a  good  mixture  of  growls  and  screams  as  well  as  the  speed  of  grindcore  and  the  music  also  brings  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

At  times  you  can  hear  some  morbid  sounding  melodies  in  the  guitar  riffing  and  the  songs  also  go  for  more  of  a  mid  90's  brutal  death/grind  sound  and  as  the  album  progresses  the  band  brings  in  elements  of  thrash  on  one  of  the  tracks  and  the  whole  album  is  very  brutal  form  beginning  to  end  and  there  is  not  a  single  guitar  solo  or  lead  to  be  heard  anywhere  on  the  recording.

Gorgatron takes  the  mid  90's  style  of  brutal  death  metal  and  mixes  it  with  grindcore  to  create  a  very  heavy  sounding  recording,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  zombies,  murder  and  insanity.

In  my  opinion  Gorgatron  are  a  very  great  sounding  brutal   mixture  of  death  metal  and  grindcore  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Flesh  Erosion"  "Thrasher  Basher"  "The  Uncovering"  and  "Drunken  Cunt".  8  out  of  10.

Extinctionist Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?

A: Since the recordings we've played a lot of shows. For example on festivals like "Nice To Eat You Death Fest" in Czech Republic, Berlin Death Fest and Las Vegas Death Fest.

2.In November you released a new album, how would you describe the sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you released in the past?

A: The sound is much more clear and powerful and pretty dynamic at the same time. It was important for us to get a heavy sound in which you can understand what the different instruments do. We didn't want to get a sterile and overproduced sound like a lot of technical Bands do nowadays.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?

A: Our new album is a conceptual album and has a story that begins with the intro of the first song and ends with the outro of the last song. The main subject is about an extraterrestrial species that comes to our planet to establish their own race and make experiments with the humans.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'EXTINCTIONIST'?

A: EXTINCTIONIST doesn't really exist in the dictionary… It is more a creation of the word "extinction". In our case it means that it is somebody or something that is going to destroy the human life in many different kind of ways.

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

A: There were a lot of shows that were awesome… we can't count them all. But the best shows in 2014 wereat Nice To Eat You Death Fest, Berlin Death Fest and Las Vegas Death Fest. These are huge festivals with a lot of bands and fans but we felt very welcome, made a lot of new friends, met bands and had a lot of fun. Like Florian (our drummer) said: "My personal favorite was last years (2014) show at Chemiefabrik in Dresden, because it’s my hometown and the venue was packed with many friends and fans of extreme music. A show with EXTINCTIONIST is intense and exhausting but on the other side is a lot of fun. I perform extreme music with a smile on my face."

6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

A: Yes, we have some confirmed shows. For example Frankfurt Death Fest with Katalepsy (US), Stillbirth, Carnal Decay, Indecent Excision and many more. We also have some other plans but they are not safe yet.

7.The new album was released on Rising Nemesis Records, can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

A: Rising Nemesis Records is a very good independent and underground label with a lot of really good and well known bands in Europe and the USA. They are good friends of ours and do their job very well.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your newer music by fans of technical and brutal death metal?

A: The feedback we got after shows was incredible. Fans were thankful for bringing our music to them and the crowd in front of the stage grew more and more. Also, the feedback, especially from the reviews we got for our new album, was great. For example:
www.insidethecoffin.com/ReviewEXTINCTIONISTPORTALSOFEXTRATERRESTRIALINVASIONS/
"In the brutal deathmetal genre PORTALS OF EXTRATERRESTRIAL INVASIONS is definitely one of the better releases coming from Germany in a long time. Recommended stuff!"

9.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part off?

A: Christian, our vocalist, plays bass guitar in a friends progressive rock band, called Aniconic, which has female front vocals with influences from Tool and A Perfect Circle.
Jörg,our bassist, plays in another brutal Death Metal band called ENDEMICY,which is pretty fast and without compromise!
Florian, our drummer, would love to do a progressive metal project, but his little family takes most of his time and he only has time for one band.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

A: That's hard to say. Also because the market in this genre is full of bands both good and bad.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

A: There are a lot of bands that gave us influences. For example Deeds Of Flesh, Wormed, Defeated Sanity, Dying Fetus, Suffocation and so many more! Currently we listen to many styles of music. Just a small selection would be like: Bloodbath, Periphery, Disgorge, Cattle Decapitation, Aristocrats, Benighted, Lost Soul, Devangelic, Condemned, Antropofagus, Original Soundtracks of games and movies, etc.

12.What are some of your non musical interests?

A: Sports, movies, video games, reading books, riding unicorns (laughing)

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

A: Supporting the underground doesn't mean to support yourself!

Recueil Morbide/Morbid Collection/Great Dane Records/2015 CD Review

Recueil  Morbide  are  a  band  from  France  that  plays  a  very  brutal  and  slamming  form  of  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015  album  "Morbid  Collection"  which  was  released  by  Great  Dane  Records.

A  very  fast  and  brutal  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  as  well  as  some  high  pitched  screams  and  melodies  that  have  a  black  metal  feeling  to  them  as  well  as  a  great  amount  of  guttural  growls  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

At  times the  vocals  have  a  deathcore  feeling  to  them  and  after  awhile  the  songs  start  bringing  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  having  solos  and  leads  that  are  in  a  very  melodic  musical  direction  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  small  amount  of  spoken  word  parts  and  clean  playing  can  be  heard  in  some  songs  along  with  another  track  bringing  in  a  brief  use  of  clean  singing  while  the  main  focus  remains  on  a  heavy  and  brutal  sound.

Recueil  Morbide  plays  a  style  of  death  metal  that  is  very  diverse,  brutal  and  original  sounding  and  if  they  would  take  the  pig  squeals  out  of  the  music  they  could  be  considered  among  some  of  the  best  brutal  death  metal  bands  out  there,  the  production  sound s very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  death,  struggles  and  depression  themes.

In  my  opinion  Recueil  Morbide  are  a  very  decent  sounding  brutal  death  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Ritual  Time"  "Chronicle  of  A  Decline  Perversions"  "Nightmarish  Collapse"  and  "travel  To  See".  7  out  of  10.

Devast/Into Decimated Reality/Grind House Productions/2015 CD Review

Devast  are  a  band  originally from  Algeria  but know  resides  in  Argentina  and  plays a  very  technical  and  brutal  form  of  death/gore  metal  and  this  a  review  of  their  2015  album  "Into  Decimated  Reality"  which  was  released  by  Grind  House  Productions.

Dark  sound  effects  which  also  return  later  on  during  the  recording  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  human  torture  noises  and  after  the  intro  the music  goes  for  a  very  fast,  brutal  and  technical  death  metal  direction  along  with  some  guttural  growls  and  you  can  also  hear  a  small  amount  of  melody  in their  music  at  times  and  the  solos  and  leads  also  remain  true  to  a  technical  direction.

All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  songs  also  have  more  of  a  modern  brutal  death  metal  sound  to  them  and  some  of  the  tracks  also bring  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  at  times  the  vocals  bring  in  elements  of  deathcore  and  gore/grind  which  can be  annoying  at  times  while  the  talent  and  brutality  of  the  guitars  and  drums  make  up  for  it.

Devast  plays  a  style  of  death  metal  that  is  very  modern,  brutal and  technical  sounding  and  while  I  do  not  like  some  of  the  vocals  the  band  uses  I  still  think  the  instruments and  brutality  make  the  music  sound  interesting,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  covet  death,  termination  and  extinction  themes.

In  my  opinion  Devast  are  a  very  decent  sounding  technical  and  brutal  death  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Physical  And  Mental  Affliction"  "Dismembered  Alive  With  Extreme  Vice"  and  "Humans  Pushed  to  Commit  Mass  Genocide".  7  out  of  10.

Kerangkenk/Onslaught Of Psychopath/Rantai Production/2014 CD Review

Kerangkenk  are  a  band from  Indonesia  that  plays  a  very  brutal  form  of  death/gore  metal and this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "Onslaught  Of  Psychopath"  which  was  released  by  Rantai  Production.

Dark  sound  effects  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  more  of  a  fast  and  brutal  direction  that  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  along  with  some  growls  that  can  be  very  dark  and  guttural  at  times  and  the  songs  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast parts  and  they  also  bring  in  solos  and  leads  that  are  rooted  in  a  90's  style  of  death  metal/

All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  at  times  both  the  riffs  and  solos  bring  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  the  songs  also  focus more  on  a  90's  style  of  brutal  death  metal  that  is  more  heavily  influenced  by  the  East  Coast  and  Florida  U.S. bands  of  that  era  while  some  of  the  riffing  also  has  a  thrash  feeling  at  times  and  towards  the  end  the  end  brings  in  an  instrumental  that  would  fit  on  a  horror  movie  sound  track  before  closing  the  album  with  a  very  heavy  track.

Kerangkenk  plays  a  style  of  brutal  death  metal  that  is  more  rooted  in  the  90's  style  and  shows  that  death  metal  can  still  be  very  brutal  without  having  to  resort  to  the  modern  elements,  the  production  sound s very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Inhumanity,  Suffering,  and  Greed.

In  my  opinion  Kerangkenk  are  a  very  great  sounding  brutal  gore/death  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of t his  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Psychoneurosis"  "Venomous.. Suicide  Victim"  and  "Welcome  To  The  Rot/End/Gore".  8  out  of  10.

On  some  of  the  tracks  modern  death metal  elements  can  be  heard  while  the  band  does  remain  true  to  a  Polish  style  of  death  metal  and  there  is  also  a  brief  instrumental  before  returning  back  to  vocals  on  the  following  tracks  and  they  demonstrate  a  great  amount  of  talent  and  skill  a s musicians  throughout  the  recording.

Embrional  creates  another  brutal  and  technical  death  metal  album  that h as  a  touch  of  black  metal  elements  and  you  can  hear  a  great  amount  of  progression  over  the  last  3  years,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  The  End  Of  Mankind.

Khariot Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Khariot is an experimental progressive death metal band from Perth, Western Australia; starting up towards the end of 2008 between our drummer Mike, former guitarist Shah Zaini, and myself (Gavin Foo). We had come from pretty different musical backgrounds but also shared a few musical goals - the most important being that we did not compromise our songwriting and sound for anything. Our former bassist Darren Joy, joined shortly thereafter and after a year of gigging, went into the studio to record our first release, 'Disymposium'. For our latest release, 'Esoteric', Khariot was a 2 person studio band. Technically, Mike played the drums and performed his own edits, if any - and I played/performed pretty much everything else.

2.So far you have released 2 albums, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on both of the recordings and also how do they differ from each other?

This is always the toughest question to answer, as there is no definitive description to our sound. Every label we try to put on it usually garners criticism from one angle or another, and generally our reviewers also have a tough time describing it. We are not a band copying a style or a sound. We are trying to create our own sounds and language through our instruments, whilst inspired by our heavy (and non-heavy) inspirations. 'Experimental progressive death' is the closest we have gotten to so far and fans/reviewers have stated similarities to Gorguts, Death, Cynic, Deathspell Omega, Ulcerate.
'Disymposium' certainly has more of a blackened death feel to it at times compared to 'Esoteric', and that is really the only difference. The atmosphere as translated into sound on 'Esoteric' is also a lot more vast, where I would really try to push the boundaries of what you could do with dissonance, whilst still keeping definition in the notes/chords and not turning it into mud. We have stayed on the same tuning, which is Standard D if anyone was curious - with the exception of 'Khatharsis', which is Dropped C.
The intent was always to produce thought provoking music, musically and lyrically - the differences between the releases is simply this - our goal realized through the 2 current members, instead of the 4....... and it is certainly more matured and evolved than the last.

3.Can you tell us a little bit more about the lyrics the band explores with the music?

The lyrics in majority are based around philosophical and metaphysical themes, which are usually used in conjunction with the 'outer' story. On 'Disymposium' though, it was very much from a third person perspective, whereas 'Esoteric' is completely in the first person. Not having to share the lyrical duties this time around, a lot of the lyrics are channeled versions of my own personal experiences, and instead of each song being an individual story, the entire album is a journey of one story.
An example from the first record, 'Cerebral Continuum' - on the forefront it is a Lovecraftian themed song and references to death by drowning, but under the surface it is about dealing with being in a coma, and/or being overwhelmed by the thoughts going on in one's head.

4.The band has been around since 2008 and has only put out 2 albums, can you tell us a little bit more about the gaps between releases?

The time between our first album which came out in 2011, and Esoteric in 2015 was filled with member departures in 2012, and a lot of writing through to mid 2013. I have always written songs with our ex-guitarist Shah, so having full reigns creatively and lyrically was a fun challenge and I took my time with it as I'm extremely critical of my own work. There were also delays in the recording process and even a few personal issues arose in that time.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Khariot'?

Khariot is a bastardized spelling of Kerayot. Kerayot means cluster of townships, but it also stems from the byname of the Judas’ Iscariot. Iscariot in itself is a metathesis of sicarius which means ‘dagger-man’ or contract killer in Latin. It doesn’t really have any significant meaning to us and just sounded cool. Nothing to do with being religious as we are far from being religious people. Hilariously, people hardly ever pronounce it right, not that it really matters. Should have thought that one through a little better...

6.Currently there are only 2 members in the band but there was a full line up in the past, are you open to expanding the line up again in the future or do you chose to remain a duo?

We would be interested in doing so if there was a party or parties that were interested. What we are NOT interested in, is a hired gun. We want a shared vision to create thought provoking and challenging music, and we do not compromise. If this sounds like you, whether you are local to Perth or not - send us an email or a message. Otherwise, we are happy to go where the path takes us.

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

I have personally enjoyed every show we played - the ones where we were really tight, the ones where we weren't completely bringing it, the ones where some were too drunk................
Our stage performance is as chaotic at our sound. Perhaps it was the time signatures, perhaps it was the chaos - but we tended to scare the living fuck out of people and they'd be standing at the back of the venue with very, very confused looks upon their faces.

8.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

We are always looking.

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of extreme metal?

We get a lot of love from Poland, Germany, the UK and Indonesia! We also have tapped into other parts of Europe over the years and only recently with 'Esoteric' have we seen some recognition from the US. We always appreciate the feedback we get from fans, especially when they go out of their way to message you, only if just to say that they liked an album. The music isn't for everybody, and we have received negative criticism as well as positive - but the most important thing is that you listen to it first before writing it off.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

I don't have that kind of foresight, but I can tell you one thing - I will not be writing lyrics anymore. I have pretty much put down everything I have had to say over the last 2 records, and in my other projects. Unless I have something passionate and new to write about, I am not going to be repeating myself. I don't know if it impacts other writers much, but writing lyrics has taken its toll on me, especially on 'Esoteric'.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

It is a massive list. There are great bands in almost every genre that do their own thing, and those are the ones I tend to admire and listen to the most. Gorguts, Deathspell Omega, Ulcerate, Pyrrhon, Illogicist, Cryptopsy, Tool, Mastodon, Enslaved, Opeth, Ephel Duath, Cynic, Deftones, Psycroptic, Animals As Leaders, Nine Inch Nails, Martyr, Meshuggah, Rotten Sound, Strapping Young Lad.
I started off with the blues and graduated into thrash when I heard my first thrash record, and still my favourite album of all time - Metallica's ...And Justice For All. You can place almost any good thrash record on that list. Mike's list would also differ greatly to mine, which is almost the whole genius of Khariot, as we amalgamate all these cool sounds into one thing - as long as it works as isn't forced.

Currently I have a few different albums on rotation, some of these have been on permanent rotation* since their release.......
Ephel Duath - Through My Dog's Eyes*
Fallujah - The Flesh Prevails
Baring Teeth - Ghost Chorus Among Old Ruins
Decapitated - Blood Mantra
Pyrrhon - An Excellent Servant but a Terrible Master*
Plebeian Grandstand - Lowgazers
Gorguts - From Wisdom to Hate / Obscura / Coloured Sands*

12.Does Occultism play any role in your music?

If any - only in themes, never in practice. We are into many, many weird things.

13.What are some of your non musical interests?

I am glad this question came up, because this involves some of the weird things mentioned in the previous questions.
I read a lot of graphic novels, which really is the cover up term to say that I read a lot of comic books. Grant Morrison's 'The Invisibles' plays an extremely important role in the concept of 'Esoteric', as did quite a lot of Mike Mignola's work on 'Hellboy' and 'B.P.R.D.'. This includes the concepts of multiverses and alternate dimensions. One thing that seems to recur in popular culture is our perception of alternate worlds - if these worlds existed out there, do you really think our minds could perceive or comprehend it all?
Edgar Allen Poe and his genius works are also referenced at some point, the most notable being his 'Conqueror Worm'.
Horror and sci-fi movies, especially the 'Alien' franchise - best of both worlds.

14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
If we wanted to make money, we wouldn't be playing experimental progressive death. We just want an honest listen, so if you have heard Khariot and enjoy it, share us. Share us on your social media, blogs, webzines. Promotion sure isn't easy when you can't play live, reside in the most isolated city on earth and can't be lumped into a genre. Thank you for reading, and keep your minds open.

Illdisposed/Four Depressive Seasons/Heartburn Music/2015 Vinyl Re-Issue Review

Illdisposed  are  a  band  from  Denmark  that  has  been  covered  on  numerous  occasions  in  this  zine  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  1993  album  "Four  Depressive  Seasons"  which  was  re-issued  on  vinyl  this  year  by  Heartburn  Music  and  shows  a  style  that  was  still  in  a  melodic  death  metal  direction  but  much  more  raw,  dark  and  brutal.

Deep  death  metal  growls  start  off  the  album  along  with  a  very  fast  and  old  school  death  metal  sound  which  also  utilizes  atmospheric  synths  at  times  along  with  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  with  the  alter  also  incorporating  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  in  a  very  dark  and  melodic  direction.

Elements of  groove  can  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  and  at  times  some  of  the  tracks  also  utilize  a  small  amount  of  clean  parts  and  the  vocals  that  are  utilized  where  very  guttural  yet  understandable  for  the  time  period  this  album  was  recorded  and  you  can  also  hear  a  touch  of  Swedish  death  metal  in  the  bands  musical  style.

As  the  album  progresses  spoken  word  parts  can  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  on  of  the  alter  tracks  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  horror  movie  samples  as  well  as  a  small  amount  of  operatic  female  vocals  while  the  main  focus  remains  on  a  very  heavy  and  dark  musical  style.

Illdisposed  had  more  of  a  heavier  and  darker  sound  on  this  recording  while  still  being  very  melodic  and  original  for  their  time,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  hateful  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  was  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Illdisposed  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  enjoy  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Forbidden  Summer  Poetry"  "Life  Equals  Zero  (A  Love  Song)"  "Never  Ceasing  Melancholic  Spring"  and  "With  The  Lost  Souls  On  Our  Side".  8  out  of  10.

Mistweaver/Nocturnal Bloodshed/Susperia Records/2015 CD Review

Mistweaver  are  a  band  from  Spain  that  plays  a  melodic  form  of  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015  album  "Nocturnal  bloodshed"  which  will  be  released  in  March  by  Susperia  Records.

Sounds  of  birth  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  classical  guitars  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  leads  up  to  some  drum  beats  and  spoken  word  parts  before  adding  in  more  of  a  heavy  and  atmospheric  sound  and  after  the  intro  the  music  speeds  up  and  adds  in  blast  beats  and  death  metal  growls.

When  the  album  finds  its  style  it  is  in  a  melodic  death  metal  direction  but  also  mixes  in  a  great  amount  of  atmospheric  and  symphonic  elements  along  with  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  when  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  bring  more  of  an  old  school  death  metal  sound  to  the   recording  while  also  remaining  true  to  the  melodic  tradition  of  the  bands  musical  style.

On  some  of  the  tracks  operatic  female  vocals  can  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  most  of  the  vocals  are more  deeper  than  most  melodic  death  metal  growls  and  a  good  portion  of  the  music  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  darker  side  of  early  90's  death  metal  and  the classical  guitars  of  the intro  also  return  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  a  small  amount  of  spoken  word  parts  and  some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  another  track  bring s in  elements  of  folk  metal.

Mistweaver  plays  a  style  of  melodic  death  metal  that  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  while  also  mixing  in  atmospheric  and  symphonic  elements  which  also  gives  their  musical  style  more  of  a  modern  feeling,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  death,  sorrow,  war  and  medieval  themes.

In  my  opinion  Mistweaver  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric,  symphonic  and  melodic  death metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  biggest  Threat"  "Hell's  Arrival"  "Nocturnal  Bloodshed"  and  "Deciever's  Fall".  8/5  out  of  10.

NilExistence Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

We are NilExistence, a band born from the ashes of our other band Disfigured Dead. We are from Moravia, NY and we're here to bring the pain!

2.Recently you have released a promo, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?

I would say aggressive and mixed with many emotions and feels.

3.The band formed from the ashes of 'Disfigured Dead', what was the decision behind disbanding the old band and starting this new project?

Well at the start of Disfigured Dead we were really going for the old school approach and as we went on we evolved more and more into something that was just way away from what we started as, so we decided to go with a name that we thought just fit the new approach better and we just thought we were to far away from what we thought Disfigured Dead was to us.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?

We explore the nothingness of life and all the topics that lie within the nothingness that we feel is life.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'NilExistence'?

Well to me it means pretty much just what it says nonexistent existence which goes along with what I was saying our lyric topics were about which in a nutshell is that everything is nothing.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

We haven't actually played a show under the new name but we played with Nile and we've played with Exhumed before and its always cool playing with bands that influence you and that you've grown up on. As for describing our stage performance I guess you'll have to just check us out after the albums released.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans once the new album is released?

We're hoping to really get out there and play quite a few shows once we get the ball rolling with the new album and hopefully touring but we'll see what the future brings.

8.Is the new album going to be released with the support of a label or are the band members going for the DIY approach to releasing the recording?

Well once the album gets mixed and mastered in March we are going to be sending it around to see if we can get any labels interest in putting it out so I guess that's just another thing that we'll have to see what the future brings.

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of brutal death metal that have heard it so far?

I would say that just from the few reviews we have gotten from the promo the feedback has been positive and people seem to like it.

10.When can we expect the new album to be released?

I would say hopefully within a year from now but we will be releasing videos of the making of the album and shooting a music video and play throughs before it will be released so that everyone will get to hear the crushing hammer that is NilExistence.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

We have many influences but to name a few I would say the band Hate, Decapitated, Nile, Behemoth and as for musical styles we really trying just listening to as much as we can and just learn all the little things that the different metal/rock genres have to bring and just use them in our own ways. Music nowadays we have been listening to Aborted- The Necrotic Manifesto, Hideous Divinity- Cobra Verde, Beneath- The Barren Throne, Behemoth- The Satanist, Decapitated-Blood Mantra, Black Crown Initiate- The Wreckage Of Stars, Hour Of Penance- Regicide, Krimh- Krimhera, Septicflesh- Titan, Soen- Tellurian and I'm patiently
waiting for my preorder for the new Hate- Crusade: Zero cd to come in!

12.What are some of your non musical interests?

Me (Dave) I personally like to workout and golf but other than that I'm either playing death metal or listening to music ha.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

I would just like to tell everyone to check out our www.facebook.com/nilexistenceofficial page and just lookout for our upcoming videos and hopefully sooner than later our album release and thanks to anyone who reads this interview and I hope to see you on the road!!!

Garroter/IIdentity/2013 CD Review

Garroter  are  a  band  from  Poland  that  plays  a  very  brutal  and  slamming  form  of  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their self  released  2013  album  "Identity".

A  very  dark  intro  starts  off  the  album  and  after  the  into  the  music  starts  getting  a  lot  of  heavier  and  goes  for  more of  a  modern  and  brutal  death  metal  sound  along  with  some  angry  sounding  growls  and  after  awhile  the  music  starts  incorporating  more  slam  parts  along  with  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

When  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  bring  in  more  of  a  technical  feeling  to  the  bands  musical  style  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  when  blast  beats  are  utilized  they  add  more  brutality  to  the  recording  and  at  time s the  music  also  incorporates  a  small  amount  of  melodic  riffing  along  with  a  touch  of  old  school  death  metal  elements  while  one  of  the  tracks  also  add  in  bass  leads  that  are  in  more  of  a  funk  rock  direction  while  the  main  focus  remains  more  on  a  brutal  style  of  death  metal  while  some  tracks  also  bring  in  a  touch  of  groove  and  thrash  metal.

Garroter  plays  a  style  of  death  metal  that  is  very  brutal  and  adds  in  a  lot  of  slam  elements  while  the  thrash  and  groove  metal  influences  make  their music  sound  a  bit  more  different  than  most  bands  of  this  genre,  the  production  sound s very  professional  for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  cover  real  life,  anti  religion  and  mythology  themes.

In  my  opinion  Garroter  are  a  very  decent  sounding  slam  death  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Impact  Fuze"  "Identity"  "Enuma  Elish"  and  "God  For  Gods".  8  out  of  10.

Insepulto/The Necrodex/Memento Mori/2015 CD Review

Insepulto  are  a  band  from  Costa  Rica  that  plays  a  very  old  school  form  of  death  metal  along  with  a  touch  of  melodic  blackened  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015  album  "The  Necrodex"  which  was  released  by  Memento  Mori.

Thunder  sounds  and  demonic  operatic  chants  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  spoken  word  samples  and  after  the  intro  the  music  starts  going  for  a  very  dark  yet  heavy  old  school  death  metal  sound  along  with  some  melodic  guitar  leads  that  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording  and  after  awhile  high  pitched  screams  and  deep  growls  become  a  huge  part  of t he  recording.

Blast  beats  can  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  along  with  the  riffs  utilizing  a  great  amount  of  melody  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  the  screams  also  have  a  tinge  of  black  metal  to  them  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  few  tracks  that  are  long  and  epic  in  length  are  added  onto  the  recording  and  at  times  the  riffs  also  bring  in  elements  of  thrash  metal  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

Insepulto  plays  a  style  of  death  metal  that  is  very  old  school  in  the  90's  tradition  while  also  being  very  melodic  at  times  and  adding  in  a  touch  of  black  metal,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  death  themes.

In  my  opinion  Insepulto  are  a  very  great  sounding  old  school  death  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Return  Of  The  Impious"  "Apocalyptic  Godless  Intervention"  "The  Chaos  The  Ancients  Spoke  Of"  and  "Odor  Mortis".  8  out  of  10.

Khariot/Esoteric/2015 CD Review

Khariot  are  a  duo  from  Australia  that  plays  a  very  brutal,  extreme,  experimental  and  progressive  form  of  death  metal  with  some  black  metal  elements  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2015  album  "Esoteric".

A  very  dark  and  atmospheric  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  clean  playing  that  is  alos  used  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  album  and demonic  voices  which  lead  up  to  more  of  a  heavier  musical  direction  and  after  awhile  melodic  guitar  leads,  death  metal  growls  and  blast  beats  become  a  huge  part  of  the  recording  and  a  good  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

You  can  hear  a  lot  of  brutal  and  technical  parts  in  the  bands  musical  style  along  with  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  the  solos  and  leads  the  band  uses  display  a  great  amount  of  talent  and  skill  and  are  also  a  huge  highlight  of  the  bands  musical  style  and  you  can  also  hear  a  small  amount  of  high  pitched  screams  being  utilized  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  as  the  album  progresses  atmospheric sounds  are  brought  into  some  parts  of  the  songs  and  towards  the  end  one  of  the  tracks  brings  in  a  jazz influence.

Khariot  play  a  style  of  death  metal  that  is  very  brutal  and  extreme  while  also  being  very  progressive  and  technical  at  the  same  time  as  well  as  adding  in  a  touch  of  grind  and  black  metal,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics cover  philosophical  and  metaphysical  themes.

In  my  opinion  Khariot  are  a  very  great  sounding  brutal,  technical  and  progressive  death  metal band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Hydra"  "Infinite,  Intrinsic  Eye"  and  "Labyrinth".  8  out  of  10.
