Interview questions for Carved:
Answer Damn, guitarist and Cris, singer.
1.Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?
(Damn) We are excited to finally play live the music from “Kyrie Eleison”. The release of the new album has been a very difficult process and we hope to be able to take the widest possible satisfaction.
2.Recently you have released a new album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?
(Damn) We designed the new album to give elements of continuity and elements of break with the “Dies Irae”, too tied to past members no longer present. The goal was to create a concept album much more creative and mature than the last, ranging in various genres and influences using mythology as a canvas for the songs. We wanted to evolve in the composition, in the harmonies, in the lyrics, arranged orchestral and
technique, taking advantage of the particular features of “Dies Irae”.
3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
(Damn) The inspirational keys of the whole concept are mythological and folkloric elements taken from different cultures, from the Greek, to Arabic, to Christianity and much more. We first conceived the topics and the roles of the songs, and then we tried to give more harmony possible between music and lyrics. Through the main story we realized we wanted a philosophical approach about Fate, Free Will and Faith.
4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Carved'?
(Cris) The name “Carved” is born in the beginning of our history, by an idea of Alessandro, ex-guitarist former band; “Carved” is a word really strong and perfect to describe what the band would say and do: to carve emotions in our audience, in our music, in our shows.
If I close my eyes, I couldn’t be able to find any other word to represent our music.
The new logo made by the Italian master of logo View From The Coffin, is a perfect balance between all the various influences that flow in the simple only word “carved”.
5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?
(Cris) The live dimension is the best expression of our music; every show of our past was important and it had leave special memories. I remember with very pleasure all the country and the people met in the tour of Dies Irae, for sure the best shows have been the gig with Amon Amarth at Estragon in Bologna, and shows along Ukraine, Latvia and Estonia.
(Damn) We are trying to play these new songs in the most powerful way, and also we want to allow the listeners to “sink” in our epic and melancholic feel.
6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?
(Cris) We have started the promotion of the brand new album Kyrie Eleison with some shows in our country and some radio interviews; we have prepared two release party, in our city in a special club that is a second home for me, Shake Club, and in Rome at Traffic Club with other bands of our label.
Shows are the most important part of the promotional path of an album, and we are hungry to beat much more stages as possible! For sure we will prepare with our agencies an European tour for the next months!
7.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of extreme metal?
(Cris) Until now we are so proud of the appreciations of fans and webzines; with the first album we have met a lot of people, and the reactions, especially with in the shows, have been always strong and enthusiastic; this is for us a injection of new energy for all the process of our music journey.
8.Are any of the band members currently involved with any other bands or musical projects these days?
(Damn) Alessio (guitar) is involved in another band, Souldeceiver, band ranging from Metalcore to Death\Thrash style. Right now he’s the only one with another musical project.
9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
(Damn) I hope that we can create a more mature sound, rich of more influences, and a more mature narrative, rich of more topics. Never stop the evolution and never enough epic!
10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
(Damn) Very important bands for us have been Dimmu Borgir and Septicflesh, but also Opeth, Moonspell, Dark Tranquillity, Amon Amarth, to name only the most obvious influences. We ranging from Gothic to Progressive to Melodic Death but we are also inspired by classical composers such as Mussorgsky, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and by soundtrack composers such as Hans Zimmer. The conjugation of all these elements is very natural, based on our personalities rather than on a predetermined sound culmination.
11.What are some of your non musical interests?
(Damn) Personally I’m interested in History and Philosophy and I’m in the middle of an academic path the University of Pisa. Also I’m addicted with tv series.
(Cris) I’m lost in Wanderlust; one life is not enough to see all the country I wish to discover. And one life is not enough to read all the books I wish to read.
Together with the music, my life is dedicated to the sea, and by this atavistic love and respect for the sealife, born our partnership and support to Sea Shepherd, the most important non-profit, marine wildlife conservation organization.
The environmental protection and the respect for the oceans and nature are a very important key of interpretation of our arguments.
