Scalpel are a band from Boston, Massachusetts that plays a very heavy and brutal form of gore/death metal and this is a review of their 2013 album "Sorrow And Skin" which was released by Sevared.
"Ripe" begins with heavy guitar riffs, blast beats and growls which takes the music into a more brutal direction along with some high pitched screams and after awhile powerful bass playing makes its presence known briefly along with some guitar solos that utilize some melody before heading back to the rhythms and after awhile the song slows down and mixes in a bass lead before reverting back to its brutal roots.
"Gutmulch" begins with some brutal guitar riffs and blast beats which lead to some growls and technical elements mixing in with the brutality as well as mixing in some screams which lead to some solos before returning to the rhythms and getting more brutal.
"The Woodsman" begins with some brutal guitar riffing, blast beats and growls along with some screams kicking in shortly after that and mixing in with the growls as well as getting even more brutal and after a minute passes by you can hear some powerful bass playing along with some melodic guitar leads kicking in after awhile briefly and mixing in with the rhythms.
"The Black Juices" begin with some heavy guitar riffing, leads and drums setting up the mood for some growls and blast beats and after awhile screams start kicking in and mixing with the growls, as the song moves on the chaos calms down for a second before heading into a dark and melodic direction before getting fast and brutal again and mixing in some guitar solos.
"Skullscraper" begins with some powerful bass playing and drums leading to some growls and melodic guitar riffs while remaining heavy at the same time which leads to a more fast and brutal direction along with some leads in the background before reverting back to rhythms.
"Mincemaster" begins with some heavy guitar riffs, drums and melodic leads setting up the mood for some growls and blast beats which take the song into a more brutal direction while also adding in some melody in the riffing and towards the end you can hear some high pitched screams.
"Sentinels Of Severed Flesh" begins with some brutal guitar riffs, blast beats and deep growls which lead to a brief use of high pitched screams and after awhile melodic riffing starts kicking in along with some heavy mid paced sections and screams,
"Sorrow And Skin" begins with some acoustic guitars which utilize both finger picking and full chords leading some drums and heavy, melodic guitar riffing along with some powerful bass playing which also mixes in a small amount of leads before the blast beats and growls kicking in and the song switches back and forth between mid paced and fast sections before going into a slow direction along with some dark riffing while remaining heavy at the same time setting up the mood for some guitar leads that only are around for a few seconds before going back to its brutal roots.
"Unspeakable" begins with some old school death metal style guitar riffing and drums which leads to some growls, screams and blast beats as well as switching back and forth between slow and fast parts which lead to some technical elements getting added into the riffing and towards the end a brief use of guitar solos make their presence known.
"The Exterminator_ Human Slaw" begins with some harsh noise elements and stays in that direction for 8 minutes.
Song lyrics cover gore and disease, while the production has a very strong, powerful, heavy, brutal and professional sound to it where you can hear all of the musical instruments that are present on t he recording.
In my opinion Scalpel are a very great sounding heavy and brutal gore/death metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Ripe" "The Woodsman" "Sentinels Of Severed Flesh" and "Unspeakable". RECOMMENDED BUY.
