Ulcerate are a band from New Zealand that plays a very brutal and technical form of death metal with black metal influences and this is a review of their 2013 album "Vermis" which was released by Relapse Records.
"Odium" starts off with some dark sounding riffing which has a drone like feeling to them and after awhile drum beats and blackened death metal growls make their way into the song.
"Vermis" starts off with some heavy technical death metal guitar guitar riffing, powerful drums and deep growls and after awhile the song switched back and forth between slow and fast parts with blast beats as well as incorporating blackened elements as well as a variety of many different styles of riffing while remaining brutal at times.
"Clutching Revulsion" starts off with some heavy, slow and technical guitar riffing along with some powerful drums and as the song moves on it starts incorporating blast beats, mid paced and fast sections along with some deep growls and the song switched back and forth between slow, mid paced and fast along with many different types of progressive time changes and distorted bass guitars,
"Weight Of Emptiness" starts off with some avant garde sounds, slow guitar riffs and powerful drumming before going into a heavier direction with the guitar riffing while also keeping the avant garde elements and as the song moves on the growls make their presence known in the music as well as some dark bass lines and after awhile the music goes into a faster direction with some brutal sounding blast beats before going back to the slower direction of the beginning while being heavier this time around.
"Confronting Entropy" starts off with some dark guitar riffing before the drums kick and the music goes into a faster, heavier and more technical direction with some blast beats which leads to some deep growls as well as the song switching back and forth between the slow and fast parts while also adding variety to the guitar riffing.
"Fall To Opprobium" starts off with some slow and dark guitar riffing which stays the same throughout the 2 minutes of the song.
"The Imperious Weak" starts off with some dark and heavy blackened death metal guitar riffing and as the song moves on some heavy bass lines make their presence known as well as the growls which lead to the music being into a faster and heavier direction with technical parts and blast beats while also switching back and forth between the fast and slow parts.
"Cessation" starts off with a dark drone guitar riff which shortly leads to power chords, drums and the music going into a heavier direction and as the song moves on growls, mid paced and faster riffing make their presence known while also switching back and forth between the slow and fast parts and mixing in black metal elements.
"Await Rescission" starts off with heavy guitar riffing, powerful drumming along with some growls, progressive and technical elements and as the song moves on blast beats make their presence known as well as some fast and brutal guitar riffing as well as making switches back and forth between slow and fast parts along with some blackened death metal elements, and after a few minutes there is a brief guitar lead with mix's in with the rhythm parts.
Song lyrics cover Human Condition, Inner Struggles and Destruction, while the production has a very strong, powerful, heavy, dark, brutal and professional sound with most of the songs being very long and epic in length.
In my opinion Ulcerate are a very great sounding brutal and technical death metal band with black metal elements and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Vermis" "Weight Of Emptiness" and "Cessation". RECOMMENDED BUY.
