Mouldered/Chronology Of A Rotten Mind/Satanath Records/More Hate Productions/Butcher Entertainment/2017 CD Review

Mouldered  are  a  band  from  Columbia  that  plays  a  brutal  form  of  gore/death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "Chronology  Of  A  Rotten  Mind"  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Satanath  Records,  More  Hate  Productions  and  Butcher  Entertainment.

Horror  movie  samples  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  brutal  direction  that  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  while  also  adding  deep  death  metal  growls  onto  the  recording  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

When  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  chaotic  fashion  and  also  having  their  melodic  moments  while  the  music  brings  back  the  brutality  of  the  mid  90's  but also  adding  in  modern  elements  along  with  the  tracks  also  bringing  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  high  pitched  screams  and  grindcore  elements  are  also  used  at  times  as  well  as  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  melody  and  the  music  always  remains  very  heavy  and  brutal.

Mouldered  plays  a  style  of  death  metal  that  is  very  brutal  and  has  a  lot  of  American  influences,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  gore,  death  and  sadism  themes.

In  my  opinion  Mouldered  are  a  very  great  sounding  brutal  death  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "I'm  Legion"  "Succubus"  and  "Chronology  Of  A  Rotten  Mind".  8  out  of  10.

The Shadeless Emperor Interview

For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Hi, we are “The Shadeless Emperor” a 5-piece Melodic Death Metal Band hailing from Larissa, Greece. We have a handful of musical and non-musical influences that crafted our Style into something Unique and Interesting. So we started our way into the Metal phasma by early 2010, albeit the band was inactive for a couple of years. A Demo release, an 8-bit version of it, a few line-up changes and a Single later we are here with our Debut Album “Ashbled Shores” and we are quite proud of it. \m/

2. How would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recordings?

“Ashbled Shores” is An Incredibly Interesting Album. We aren't saying this because we wrote it (duh), but really any metal fan can listen to it and find loads of things that are stunning, bizarre, beautiful, dark or emotional. We have many different influences and someone that’s absolutely new to our sound can figure this out. We love Melodic Death and this is the core of our music style. Epic, Progressive, Folk, Doom, Atmospheric and Thrash influences are present and solidly established to our sound. Yet we are unable to provide you with a label to our sound. Many may label us under Progressive MDM or Epic Melodic Death yet we prefer just Melodic Death Metal. Every single person can find something different in our music style but that’s the beauty of creating music, right?

3. Some of your lyrics deal with fantasy, mythological and philosophical themes. can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in those  topics?

Literature all the way. This is truly the basis of our culture. Fantasy Literature / Mythology is the expression and expansion of the mind. To reach a level of expressing the Apathy, disgust, love, hate, passion, happiness of the society we live, we would or we would not love to live in. Mythology is the same thing, in a way. Legends, tales, folklore that turned into Myth through the years. All of those parts of Literature are filtered throughout a philosophical veil we like to use and express the aforementioned emotions, yet so much more. We are Greeks after all and we do Philosophy.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'The Shadeless Emperor'?

An Emperor is the noble term of a Tyrant. An elegant title used for a Very Powerful Leader that the ear usually interprets and redefines into a Reliable, “Honourable”, Protective and Inspiring Individual of a Past-Era Civillization. This Emperor is nothing more than a Tyrant though. “Our Emperor” has no Shadow. A Powerless Entity. An Emperor without a Shade is as good as a Sword without a Blade. The name’s inspiration is derived from Cristopher Paolini's Eragon Book Quadrilogy.

5. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Definitely the shows we shared the stage with Wolfheart and Jinjer. We had a very good time and the audience enjoyed the performance as well. As for the stage performance I would describe it as energetic and theatrical. I don't know for sure. These are the two words that came first in my mind.

6. Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

Yes we do actually. First of all there is an album release party in our Hometown, Larissa. After that around November/December there would be definitely some shows around Greece with notable bands. In the new year to come there would be a few more. Do not forget to like our Facebook Page to be notified. You never know. We may visit your Town soon.

7. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of melodic death metal?

The feedback is AMAZING. There are so many people out there sharing and supporting us in every way. There are people from all around the globe ordering the album lately. Iran, Japan, Australia, Indonesia, Brazil are some of the countries we have fans at. We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. There are so many things coming over soon, so stay tuned.

8. What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?

Almost every band member is in another project nowadays. Ethan is singing in a Modern Melodic Death project called "Scarletborn", Chris is playing guitars in a Atmospheric Rock band called "The Red White Spiral", Philippos is also participating in another Death Metal project as a singer, which they will soon release some more info for, and he also has "Arcanus", a Blackened Death Metal One-Man band. Thanasis is also playing drums in a Classic Rock band. Tasos and Chris are also guitarists in a Modern Metal/Metalcore Band called "Intensify".

9. Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

There is a solid path we are trying to pave. There are so many influences and inspirations striking us through the years that we believe we will show you something spectacular in the years to come. Sure our sound has this Progressive vibe and many Folk influences are also present. There would be variety but in a minimalistic way. You will see soon.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

We all listen to different styles of music. From Post Rock to Black Metal, K-Pop to Metalcore, from Classical Music to Crust. There are no borders in music and there should not be any. There are so many different bands that inspire us. But if you would like us to mention a few bands those would be, In Mourning, Be'lakor, Opeth, Symphony X, Trivium, Blind Guardian, Emperor, Paradise Lost. Insomnium, Eluveitie, Wintersun, Ronnie James Dio, While She Sleeps and Iron Maiden.

11.What are some of your non-musical interests?

We all love to go out and socialize. We read a lot of books, we love gaming, we love drinking beer. Thanos is a designer/psychologist, Chris is an accountant, Tasos is an IT Expert, Philippos has his own Rent-A-Car Business and he is a Sound Engineer, Thanasis is a Physics Student. We are very busy individuals.

12. Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Thanks a lot for your time and support. Make sure to take your time to listen to our music and lyrics. Read a lot, support your local scene and always try to listen to other people’s issues. Always Breathe and Create. After all, we are what we leave behind.
Last but not least Kudos to VarietyOfDeathZine for the interview and Rock On \m/

Mutilatred Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
1.  Patric: We are a four piece but sometimes a two piece (and sometimes a three piece, haha). We (Clay Lowe & I) started our band as a two piece after our other bands didn't work out. We were playing together for about 10 years at that point and wanted to keep playing metal. We eventually found two other incredible musicians/friends and have been writing as Multilatred since 2014. We are old school death metal with a decent slam influence. Simple loud and with a beat.

2.How would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?
2. Patrick: Our sound is raw and stripped down. We record at our friends studio "Lake Bottom Recording" and use the same set up we use live. Everything is tracked live without much editing. We try to make it sound as close to our live set as possible.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects that the band explores with the music?
3. Patrick: Our lyrical topic is wrapped around one main subject: "hard drugs" specifically, prescribed opiates and Heroin. We've seen it ruin the life's of people we know and it's an major crisis in our society, which affects everyone directly or indirectly. The opiate epidemic could be dealt with differently. It is frustrating to see substance abuse being used for profit in a lot of ways. I could sit here and write a book of rambled feelings  to convey how fucked up it all is. But for now our version of voicing our concern is through the music we make.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Mutilatred'?
4. Patrick: Perfect question to continue the last topic. The origin of Mutilatred came from the two words that immediately came to mind when thinking of the heroin crisis: mutilation and hatred.

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?
5. Patrick: Our best shows are almost always house shows. (Although we've played many amazing shows at bars and venues. Playing with 1349 and Origin was insane to us). Our favorite show of all time was a recent house show in Cincinnati with Sewage Grinder. The people were extremely into metal and in general they were very hospitable.

When we play live it feels like we gain a little more intensity after each show. We like to head bang as much as possible. And our other guitarist, Pat Meyers, is constantly on the verge of annihilating everything around him, which is one of my favorite things about our shows. You can tell he's 100% into it and part of the music he plays.

6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?
6. Patrick: We are doing our first weekend run at the beginning of September with two Columbus bands: Domestic Terror and Heartworm. Other than that we have some shows here and there for the next couple months.

7.You have a split coming out with 'From The Hellmouth', what are your thoughts on the other band that had participated on the recording?
7. Clay: We are very happy to be doing this split with From the Hellmouth. Such a great band in every aspect. Dark/evil tremolo picking, phenomenal drumming, loud pissed off vocals. I think they were the perfect match for us to do a split with.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of brutal death metal?
8. Clay: Everyone we've come in contact with has had a really good response to our music. On a worldwide scale, we could always be doing better. We're always trying to get our stuff out there for more death metal fans.

9.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?
9. Clay: Eli (our bass player) has a few projects he's involved in: Hung From the Rising Sun and WAX. Myself  and Patrick are in a dormant band with our friend Will called Serpent Speech. We hope to do something with that band again sometime down the line.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
10. Patrick: We are heading directly into more death metal with no end in sight.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
11. Our guitar player (Pat Meyers) former band Premonitions of War. Mutilated, GutRot, and Shitlife. Morbid Angel, Suffocation, Dying Fetus, Devourment, and 1349 are all sources of inspiration for us. Nowadays we've been listening to a lot of Defeated Sanity, Cephlatripsy, and Delusional parasitosis to name a few.

12.What are some of your non musical interests?
12. Patrick :  tattooing, drawing, painting, cartoon making.
      Clay : welding, metalworking, hockey

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
13.  Nope, that's it

This  is  a  review  of  a  split  ep  between  Ohio's  From  The  Hellmouth  and  Mutiltred  which  will  be  released  in  August  as  a  joint  effort  between  Redefinging  Darkness  and  Seeing  Red  Records  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  From  The  Hellmouth  a  band  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  an  old  school  form  of  death  metal  with  a  touch  of  slam.

Their  side of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  heavy  and  brutal  sound  along  with  some  death  metal  growls  and  the  music  also  has  a  lot  of  90's  influences  while  being  modern  at  the  same  time  and  when t he  music  speeds  up  a  great amount  of  blast  beat  can  be  heard  and  the  solos  and  leads  also  gives  the  songs  more  of an  old  school  vibe.

Throughout their  side  of  the  recording  you  can  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and fast  parts  and  screams  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  a  small  amount  of  melody and  synths  can  also  be  heard  in  the  background  briefly  along  with  a  small  amount  of nature  sounds  and  the  mid  tempo  sections  also  adds in  touches  of  slam,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  violent  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  From  The  Hellmouth  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  old  school  and  brutal  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of t he  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "The  Wolves  Must  Be Fed".

Next  up  is  Multitred  a  band  that  plays  a  brutal  style  of  slam  death  metal.

Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  heavy  and  brutal  sound  along  with  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  as  well  as  some  guttural  death  metal  growls  while  the  mid  tempo  sections  add  in  touches  of  slam  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts,

Elements  of  noise  are  also  used  at  times  and  on  the  last  track  the  music  starts  adding  in  more  of  an  avant  garde  vibe  as  well  as  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  small  amount  of  melody, the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  death  and  misanthropy  themes.

In  my  opinion  Multitred  are  a  very  great  sounding  brutal  slam  death  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Part  Of  The  Decay"  and  "Prescribed  Death".

In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  brutal  and  slam  death  metal.  8  out  of  10.

Funeralglade/May The Funeral Begin/Inverse Records/2017 CD Review

Funeralglade  are  a  band  from  Finland  that  plays  melodic  death  metal  with  some  elements  of  deathcore,  groove  and  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "Let  The  Funeral  Begin"  which  will be  released  in  August  by  Inverse  Records.

Rain  and  thunder  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  heavy  and  melodic  riffing  a  few  seconds  later  while  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording  and  the  high  pitched  screams  also  gives  the  songs  a  touch  of  black  metal  and  deathcore  style  breakdowns  are  also  utilized  at  times.

When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  yet  technical  fashion  and  after  awhile death  metal  growls  and  atmospheric  synths  are  added  onto  the  recording  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  and  the  songs  also  mix  in  a  lot  of  grove  metal  elements  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  acoustic  guitars  are  also  utilized  briefly  while  some  tracks  also  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  back  up  shouts  and  one  of  the  tracks  is  all  instrumental.

Funeralglade  plays a  musical  style  that  is  mostly  rooted  in  melodic  death  metal  while  the  deathcore,  groove  and  black  metal  elements  gives  the  songs  a  lot  more  originality,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  death,  despair,  and  hatred  themes.

In my  opinion  Funeralglade  are  a  very  great sounding  melodic  death  metal  band  with  elements  of  deathcore,  groove  and  black  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Death  (Only  Way  Out)"  and "Paincauser".  8  out of  10.
